4. Homelessness and mental health

If you are homeless or threatened with homelessness you should contact the Housing Options team at the very earliest opportunity. You can bring a support worker or a friend/family member with you to your interview.  It is also a good idea to bring proof of any medication or medical letters you may have with you to your interview. We will talk to you about your mental health and how it impacts you. This will help us assess if all of your support needs are being met and if not, whether we can offer additional support. We may also need to contact your GP or mental health worker for supporting information and evidence on your medical conditions for us to fully assess your needs.

If you struggle to talk on the phone or don't always open your post, we will try to offer you other ways to stay in contact with us. This could be through email direct to your allocated housing officer or via text message. We can also send letters in envelopes so you know it's from Teignbridge District Council before opening or you can nominate a friend, family member or support worker that you want us to discuss your case with. You will need to give us written signed consent to do share this personal information. You can withdraw this consent at any time should you wish to.

We do not have a legal duty to provide accommodation to everyone with a mental health condition. We have to assess whether you are eligible for assistance, homeless or threatened with homelessness and are in priority need.

We will work with you to try and resolve your housing situation. This may be providing or getting you the right support for you to remain where you currently live, or help to find alternative accommodation which is most often a private tenancy.
