3. Appeal an animal welfare star rating
An animal welfare licence holder can dispute the star rating awarded if they feel the score did not reflect the animal welfare standards and risk levels at the time of the inspection. This process is not to be used if a business has made improvements and wishes to be re-assessed – in this case the business should apply for a re-inspection.
Before submitting an appeal, you are encouraged to discuss your case with the inspecting officer. They can explain how the rating was awarded which may help resolve the need for a formal appeal. If you are still not satisfied with the star rating, you can then submit a formal appeal in writing.
A formal appeal will need to be submitted in writing within 21 days of the receipt of the licence (this includes weekends and bank holidays). Appeals will only be accepted on the appeal a star rating form. Please include any supporting information or documents to support your appeal.
The appeal will be decided within 21 days from the date the appeal request is received.
The appeal will be determined by a Service Manager or by someone acting on their behalf or by the equivalent in another authority. Any officer involved in the production of the rating or the inspection on which the rating is based on will not consider the appeal.
