Apply for a taxi or private hire vehicle licence

Who should make the application

It is the proprietor(s) of the vehicle who should make the application. The proprietor is the person or persons who are concerned in the keeping, employing or letting to hire of the vehicle.

Suitability of the vehicle

The vehicle must be under 5 years old at time of first registration with the council.

You will need to ensure that the vehicle is capable of meeting the council's conditions of licence. It is advisable to consider whether a licence would be issued before purchasing a vehicle.

Applying for a new vehicle licence

• your licence will be valid for 12 months
• if your vehicle fails the test you will not be issued with your plate until it has passed
