Extreme weather

Disruption to collections

Weather conditions, such as flooding or snow, can make it difficult, and sometimes dangerous, for our vehicles to access some areas. Roads that are steep, in low dips or very narrow may be difficult to access.

When the weather is bad, continue to put your waste out on your normal collection day

If we are delayed due to the weather, leave your containers out. We will return as soon as the weather conditions allow.

Windy conditions

It is important to remember to stack your boxes on windy days to help avoid items blowing from your boxes.

Frozen bins

In very cold weather it is possible that the contents of your bins may become frozen solid.

This means that when we attempt to empty your bin or food waste container, some or all of the contents won't come out.

If the contents of your bin or caddy do not come out because they are frozen, please loosen them before your next collection. We will not be able to come back to empty again before your next collection.

During cold weather, you can take a few simple measures to reduce the risk of your bin becoming frozen:

  • keep your bin/caddy lid closed
  • wrap your food waste
  • if you have a lot of garden waste, do not compress it into your bin
  • loosen the contents by sliding a spade or similar between the contents and the inside of the bin
  • store your bin in a warmer spot, for example, in a shed or garage, or beside your house
  • bag your rubbish before putting it in your bin
