Radiators

Radiators can be taken to your local recycling centre, or reclamation yard if of classic style and re-usable.

Radios

If the item is still usable, it could either be sold on or donated to a charity shop.  Most electrical items have a symbol of a crossed-out wheelie bin on them - these items should not be sent to landfill. If the item is beyond repair, we can offer a bulky waste collection service or you can take it to a recycling centre.

Records, tapes & CDs

You can donate these to hospital radio stations. Playgroups, schools and charity shops may also be interested. Unwanted CDs can be reused as drinks coasters, or make excellent scarecrows if hung shiny side up, as the reflected light from the CDs scares the birds. Unfortunately there is no way to recycle tapes, records or CDs, so unless they can be reused, they have to go in your black general waste bin.

Roofing felt

Can be taken to your nearest recycling centre but you will be charged £3.50 per bag/roll.

Rubble

Rubble and hardcore can be taken to your nearest recycling centre. For more information please contact Devon County Council, who manage the sites.

S

Sacks/bags

Bags of unrecyclable household waste should be placed in your black general waste bin for collection. We operate a strict no side-refuse policy. We can offer special 'one-off' collections of side refuse, but this must be arranged prior to your collection. Please see the request a side waste collection page.

Scrap metals

Many metals can be re-used by the scrap metal industry. Either contact a local scrap merchant or take to your local recycling centre.

Sharps

We operate a clinical waste collection service for sharps.

Shoes

Clothes and textiles can be taken to your local recycling centre, recycling bank or charity shop if reusable. Alternatively, pairs of shoes can be placed in a carrier bag, tied up and put next to your recycling boxes on your collection day.

Shredded paper

Shredded paper should be placed in your reusable sack for paper along with all other paper waste.

Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms should not be disposed of in your black bin.  Household electrical items can be taken to your local recycling centre.  Many electrical retailers also offer a take back service when purchasing a new item - please ask in store

Soil

Soil can be taken to your nearest recycling centre. From 1 April 2012 there are new charges in Recycling Centres on soil (£1 a bag, minimum £1 charge). For more information please contact Devon County Council (who manage the sites) on 0345 155 1010. Please do not put soil in your garden waste bin.

Spectacles

Some opticians take old spectacles to send overseas for charitable purposes. Most accept them to support the Vision Aid Overseas scheme.

Stamps

A selection of postage stamps, gift stamps and air mile stamps will be accepted at most charity shops.

Steel

Many metals can be re-used by the scrap metal industry. Either contact a local scrap merchant or take to your local recycling centre.

Stereos

If the item is still usable, it could either be sold on or donated to a charity shop.  Most electrical items have a symbol of a crossed-out wheelie bin on them - these items should not be sent to landfill. If the item is beyond repair, we offer a chargeable bulky waste collection service or you can take it to a recycling centre.

Storage heaters

Storage Heaters containing asbestos may be disposed of free of charge at your local recycling centre, but must be booked in advance. The whole heater must be double wrapped in plastic and sealed. Please contact Devon County Council Waste Management on 0345 155 1010 to book.
